Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. What ages of patients do you see?
    A. We treat children birth to 6 years old. Timely intervention, while a child’s brain is most adaptable, provides a strong foundation and improves developmental outcomes.
  • Q. What if I have concerns about my child’s language development, but my pediatrician tells me to “wait and see”?
    A. Sometimes, pediatricians suggest waiting to see how a child’s language will develop, but if you are worried, it is okay and receommended to get help early. Speech-language therapists can give you clear answers and ways to help your child right now. Language learning builds on previous skills, therefore it is important to understand your child’s language and get them support early, if needed, to impact their long-term language growth.
  • Q. How long will my child attend speech-language therapy?
    A. The length of time your child spends in speech-language therapy depends on a few important factors: Type and severity of challenges. For example, children on the autism spectrum may receive ongoing support and treatment vs. children with articulation delays, who may need therapy for a shorter number of weeks/months. The existence of additional support services (is the child receiving additional therapies, tutoring, etc.). Are families consistently supporting the child’s language at home by carrying-over recommended strategies.
  • Q. What if I am unsure if my child needs therapy services or an evaluation?
    A. Start with a complimentary phone call or Zoom with a skilled therapist. The initial conversation usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The therapist will want to know about your child’s language development, discuss any concerns you may have, and make suggestions for next steps, which may include an in-person meeting and/or evaluation.
  • Q. How often does my child need speech-language therapy?
    A. After we assess your child’s language, we will make recommendations for therapy. Usually, children receive therapy 1 to 3 times per week, up to 45 minutes, depending on their individual needs.
  • Q. What is the focus of Key to Growth Therapy?
    A. Key to Growth Therapy specializes in addressing language delays in children aged 0-6, focusing particularly on late talkers and language-based learning disorders. Our therapy is rooted in play-based methods, aligning with our philosophy that every child's journey to communication should be engaging and joyful.
  • Q. What does an initial screening look like?
    A. A screening is an abbreviated assessment of a child’s speech, language, and communication. A written report is not provided. Screenings are done informally through play activities and include parent interview and observation of the child in their natural environment. Based on the screening, the therapist will determine if a child needs further evaluation or if their language is age appropriate. If delays are mild, we do not recommend a full evaluation but suggest therapy and at-home strategies. If concerns are identified, a comprehensive evaluation will be necessary and the initial screening cost will apply to the evaluation.
  • Q. How does Key to Growth embody a family-centered, collaborative approach?
    A. Our practice is grounded in the philosophy that families are integral to their child’s therapy. Caregivers are encouraged to participate in therapy sessions. The therapist relies on caregivers to share their experiences outside of therapy so they can understand how to adapt and change strategies and techniques to meet the child’s and family’s evolving needs. Through this collaborative approach, caregivers feel more prepared to model and teach skills and concepts discussed in sessions.
  • Q. What are the costs of assessments and therapy at Key to Growth Therapy and do you accept insurance?
    A. We will explain all the costs clearly during our initial phone call. Key to Growth Therapy does not accept insurance. However, if you have out-of-network coverage through your insurance carrier, we will provide you with the necessary paperwork to submit. Before booking with us, we suggest you speak with your insurance carrier to understand your coverage and out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Q. What does a speech-language evaluation look like?
    A. An evaluation is an in-depth look at a child’s listening, speaking, and interaction abilities. Caregivers are asked to provide detailed information about the child’s background and developmental history prior to the evaluation. Standardized testing and developmental scales are used as well as informed observations and interviews with caregiver(s), therapist(s), and teacher(s), if applicable. You will receive a comprehensive speech-language written report detailing the performance on administered formal and informal testing within two weeks of the assessment. The report will include performance scores when relevant, an in-depth analysis of language abilities, highlighting strengths and areas of difficulty, evaluative comments, suggested next steps, potential recommendations for further specialist consultations if required, as well as defined treatment goals, along with recommended methods, techniques, and strategies for improvement.
